Safety Critical Open Source: what's the holdup?
Leading safety practitioners like Rainer are calling for change because traditional safety practices have failed to address the complexity of modern software-intensive systems.
At Codethink, we have been working with Rainer and the team at exida since 2018, developing systematic safety and security assurance techniques from the ground up, for mixed-criticality systems running complex open source and proprietary software on multi-core microprocessors.
Codethink has achieved a number of key milestones in 2025, including:
- A positive functional safety assessment to IEC 61508 and ISO 26262 standards for the Eclipse Trustable Framework
- A baseline safety asessment for a Linux-based OS to SIL 3 / ASIL D for Codethink Trustable Reproducible Linux (CTRL OS)

CES 2026 Panel Discussions
After the success of John's 2024 and 2025 talks at CES, Codethink’s President USA & Head of Product, John Ellis, will be taking part in two panels at CES 2026.

John will lead a panel in discussing the benefits of generative AI for both driver and passenger experiences.

Paul Sherwood
CEO at Codethink
Paul developed his first commercial software in 1981, founded Teleca in 1992, wrote the Software Commandments in 1996, and has consulted at OEMs, technology companies and service providers across a range of industries.
Since joining Codethink in 2010, Paul has worked primarily in the automotive and financial sectors on methods, processes and open source tooling to increase transparency, traceability, measurability and accountability for large-scale projects. In 2016, he raised a call-to-action for Trustable Software engineering on critical projects demanding safety, security, longevity, and predictable performance.

John Ellis
President and Head of Product at Codethink
John is an engineer, software developer, and business development veteran with over 25 years of experience. As a former executive at Motorola and Global Technologist at Ford Motor Company, he led or participated in teams that built many of the innovations we see today in connected vehicles on the ground and in the air.
