Semantic technology for the mobile

In September 2008 we were approached by a major mobile device manufacturer to help investigate the possibility of incorporating Tracker into their mobile software. The general idea was to organise users data and to hide the underlying filesystem by linking together and presenting files and data in context-dependant ways. Having discussed the idea it was decided that some of the more complicated use cases required RDF, as the original database was neither extensible nor powerful enough for the task. In response, Codethink wrote a highly efficient RDF store and query engine for the 0.7 version of Tracker and made it far better suited to a mobile device. Our goal was to offer the user a variety of ways to interact with their data in different UI contexts. Within a photo viewer for example, the user would be able to search for all photos taken of a certain person, place, or even time of day. In short, we wanted to bring the power of the semantic web to a mobile device.
